“Medical interventions” must be performed to preserve organs for donation in people who are still alive, and family members should no longer be able to prohibit organ donation when the attitude of the potential donor is unknown. The government proposes that.
“The number of donations is higher than ever in Sweden and has increased over time, but there is still a shortage of organs. Many of those who are waiting for a transplant have to wait too long. The government wants to allow more donations and is now presenting several proposals to contribute to it. “, says the Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren (S) in a press release.
The Government wants the reforms to the law to come into force on July 1, 2021. In addition, the National Board of Health and Welfare will be tasked with analyzing which proposals could contribute to more organ donations, a transfer that will be reported in June 2022.
