The government launches an investigation into the nationalization of the school

More than 30 years have passed since the municipalization of the school, but now the government and the cooperating parties will commission a special investigator to investigate how a state leadership for the school can work.

This is an assignment that is included in the January collaboration. The research will cover all types of schools except preschool education and municipal adult education.

It is mainly the liberals who have promoted the nationalization of the school.

– We have been working for more than 20 years that the school should be renationalized because we believe that the communalization of the school did not go well. For every year that passes, we lose a cohort of children who are not guaranteed to get the best quality that can be obtained in Swedish school, says Nyamko Sabuni.

The main reason the state should take over public schools is that the financial conditions of municipalities vary widely, Sabuni says.

– This has generated great equivalence problems and that the quality of teaching varies greatly depending on the municipality in which the children live, if it is in the countryside where there are few children or if it is the suburb with many newcomers, says Nyamko Sabuni.

Above all, the state needs assume the position of employer of teachers, principals and other personnel in public schools, he says.

– The state would be a better employer for this large and important academic group that needs an employer who has the financial means to pay a salary that corresponds to their education.

The state also has better opportunities to meet teachers’ opportunities for leadership and competency development, she says.

Another function of the state The need to take over is the correction of the national tests that are currently taken in each school. It needs to be done nationally and outside of the individual school so that we get a fair evaluation and can also compare schools with each other, Sabuni says.

– In this way, we can face what is called grade inflation and that is due to schools competing for students. Then we can guarantee that the grades that the children have received also correspond to their knowledge.

How independent schools will be affected remains to be seen.

– But, of course, they will be affected economically because it is the state that will decide how the financing model for independent schools should be as well, says Sabuni.

However, the investigation will not present concrete bills that could form the basis of a bill for the Riksdag.

– This is an important step forward in our fight for nationalization. But it is also a difficult situation because we are quite alone in this four-man constellation, says Nyamko Sabuni, referring to S, C and MP.

Do others doubt that the state will take over?

– Yes, the Social Democrats and the Center Party communalized the school, but the biggest opponent of a nationalization today, I would say is the Center Party. It is not clear where the Green Party is located.
