When the gorilla Enzo was born in Kolmården, he got a lot of attention in Sweden. He was the first gorilla cub born in the country.
And now, 14 years later, he has had children himself. Last Saturday, his partner Kiburi gave birth to a baby, after being about 8.5 months pregnant.
– The first time, the baby and the mother will stay very close to each other and therefore we have not been able to see yet if it is a woman or a man. But now it will be great to be able to follow the development of this new member of the pack, says Linda Berggren, animal manager at Kolmården, in a press release.
“Endangered species”
The zoo writes that the delivery went well for both mother and child. Before the big day, animal keepers worked in shifts to monitor the course of the pregnancy.
The little baby is the third of its kind to be born in Sweden.
The gorilla is an endangered species due to, among other things, poaching and deforestation, and Kolmården is, among other things, involved in funding a project in Nigeria where park rangers protect gorilla areas, he says Linda Berggren in the statement.
