The global chaos of the internet shows how vulnerable the internet is

The technical problem that arose with one of the world’s largest telecommunications operators, American Century Link, has now been resolved, the company writes on Twitter. But what happened clearly shows how vulnerable the Internet is, according to IT expert Siren Hofvander.

The problem emerged on Sunday afternoon and various media reported on internet problems around the world, also in Sweden. Century Link is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world and sells capacity to other operators.

– This shows how vulnerable the Internet really is, says Siren Hofvander, IT security expert.

And although Century Link is relatively unknown in Sweden, Swedish sites were affected. This is because Cloudflare company uses Century Link as the operator and therefore suffers from its technical problems.

– You could say that in the same way that it could have Comhem as an operator, Cloudflare has Century Link as an operator, says Siren Hofvander.

Cloudflare offers a kind of shield against websites against various types of online attacks. If the carrier doesn’t work, Cloudflare will have problems. And if Cloudflare is in trouble, the website the company is supposed to protect is in trouble, too. Because while Cloudflare must protect websites, the business is also important to the infrastructure of a large number of websites around the world. When Cloudflare is inactive, the pages that use the company’s services will also be automatically inactive.

– Cloudflare is one of the biggest players in the world. And the vulnerability of the Internet is that there are very few similar players in the world. So when one of the companies goes down, much of the internet gets into trouble, says Siren Hofvander.
