Israel has been a world leader in promptly vaccinating its citizens. At the same time, critical voices have been raised that the Palestinians have not yet received any injections.

But now Israel announces that the first batch of corona vaccine has been delivered to the Palestinians. It is about 2,000 doses of Moderna that have been transported to the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the delivery in a statement, saying the doses must be used by staff working in hospitals where COVID patients are treated.

“The second category of people who will receive the doses are those over 60 and those with chronic illnesses,” the statement said.

The ministry also states that they are expected to receive 50,000 additional doses in the “next few days.”

The Palestinian Authority has also tried to secure its own doses and has ordered a batch of the Sputnik vaccine from Russia.

Palestinians will also receive between 35,000 and 40,000 doses from Covax’s global vaccine program in the coming weeks, according to a World Health Organization official.
