He wrote history as the giant black mayor of New York City and described his hometown as a “wonderful mosaic.” David Dinkins has passed away at the age of 93.

Democrat Dinkins served as mayor between 1990 and 1993. When he took office, New York was marked by ethnic strife, poverty and violence, including the riots in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Dinkin’s time at work was challenging. Among other things, it expanded the city’s police force to overcome the numerous murders, something that had consequences for education, housing and welfare budgets.

The Dinkins, always polite and well dressed, were sometimes criticized for not getting the job done. But in many ways he was ahead of his time and his government became marked by historical diversity.

Dinkins grew up in Trenton, New Jersey, enlisted in the Navy, and later attended Howard University, graduating with a BA in mathematics. He later studied law at Brooklyn Law School and worked as a lawyer in New York. Then local politics took over.

After his time as mayor, David Dinkins taught at Columbia University and was a radio host. His wife from his student years, Joyce, passed away earlier this year. The couple has two children.
