The father of young children Ognjen died after the knife attack on Hisings Backa

It started out like a normal Tuesday night, 42-year-old Ognjen Kostadinovic was in the bedroom sleeping with his eight-month-old daughter Anastasija. It was raining outside and she was having a hard time calming down. After a while he came out and asked Ms. Jelena to take over, instead putting on his jacket to go out and throw out the trash.

He would also put the stroller in the warehouse and leave a mobile phone charger for his father-in-law, who would come to meet him. At 9:08 p.m. he leaves the apartment and does not return home.

– That night I camped over and over again, it could well have been me who went out, says Jelena Panic Kostadinovic, at the same time fighting back tears.

Family life is about to begin

It’s only been three days since she lost her husband and her daughter lost her father. Now she lives with her family at some distance, she has not been able to return to the apartment in Hisings Backa.

– We have never felt unsafe in the area before, but now we will not stay there.

She tells how they planned to buy a house soon. The daughter they had been dreaming of for so long had come to them eight months ago and all the hard work they had done in the last four years to build a life together had started to take off.

– When Anastasija came she was so happy. The worst thing is that now his daughter will grow up without knowing her father. Those who did this took it away. I want them to understand the damage they have done, says Jelena Panic Kostadinovic.

Society cannot accept this

The immediate family has gathered in the church on this day. They have lit candles and had discussions about the upcoming funeral. Jelena’s relatives, Bojana and Daniel, have supported her and her daughter for the first time.

Now everyone in the family agrees: they want to openly tell what actually happened.

– This shouldn’t be another knife murder you read about and then forget about. It is written every two days about violence, shootings between criminals in the current gang conflict. But now it has affected an ordinary, hard-working parent of young children who would just go out and dump the trash. We cannot let this story go, society cannot accept this, says Jelena Panic Kostadinovic.

She says they have nothing to fear. By telling who Ognjen was, they hope that more people will open their eyes to what happened, and those who saw something that night will dare to come forward and tell about it.

– If they understand that it is not a gang conflict, perhaps someone will dare to say if they saw or heard something that night. The smallest can have a great meaning.

Police: “The case is a mystery”

The police have also come out and appealed to the public for more information on the witnesses. The incident is listed as a manslaughter or manslaughter and there are still no suspects today.

The leader of the police preliminary investigation, Jarl Winqvist, has called the case a mystery.

– We have combed the area and we have not found anything that will take us forward. By all accounts, he is a completely unforgivable person. We do not see any reason for this incident. That’s the terrible thing, he says.

At 9:08 p.m. Ognjen Kostadinovic leaves the apartment and only twelve minutes later at 9:21 p.m. Jelena’s father and brother alert the police after they found him lying on the ground with several stab wounds to the chest. They were going to meet him to pick up the mobile phone charger and at first they didn’t understand that it was he who was lying there.

– It’s so hard to think about that, they hurt him terribly. How he must have felt in those last minutes … says Jelena Panic Kostadinovic and looks down while wiping a tear.

The ambulance arrives and picks him up, but only an hour later he is pronounced dead by a hospital doctor.

– This could have happened to anyone. One moment he is here and now he is gone. He was the nicest man I ever knew. Now Anastasija will not remember her father.
