Races like in Norway can also take place in Sweden.

The area of greatest risk is western Sweden.

– I don’t think people living in those areas should be concerned, but you can watch out for cracks, says Lennart Björklund, associate professor of geology at the University of Gothenburg.

The large landslide in the Norwegian Gjerdrum, which occurred yesterday Wednesday, may have been caused by the presence of fast clay in the area. Fast clay is a clay with special properties, something that exists in Norway, but also in western Sweden.

– Such landslides occur for several different reasons. If the clay becomes overloaded, it can cause a landslide. In Norway, the residential area was built, among other things, with fast clay, and the loading of the villas, in combination with heavy rains over a long period, may be the cause of the landslide, says Lennart Björklund.

Clay is very sensitive

– As soon as the clay moves or vibrates, it becomes like a flowing yogurt. Then everything in the clay is disturbed, it slides off like a banana peel, says Lennart Björklund, associate professor of geology at the University of Gothenburg.

The Swedish Geotechnical Institute, SGI, works together with, among others, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB, to prevent landslides. There are also maps that mark areas where there is a risk of landslides, and the authorities work together with the municipalities to reduce that risk.

– These races happen from time to time, and historically it has also happened here in Sweden. It is difficult to know exactly where this will happen, even if authorities work to prevent landslides, says Lennart Björklund.

No need to worry

He says you don’t have to worry about a similar landslide happening in Sweden, but that it may be good to follow up, if you know you live in an area where there is a risk of landslides.

– If it is so serious that you discover a crack in the street, in the house or on your lawn, you should contact the authorities immediately. If you discovered more cracks or saw the crack get bigger, at least I wouldn’t have stayed, says Lennart Björklund.
