The EU starts a legal process against the United Kingdom for breach of the Brexit agreement

On Thursday, the European Commission launched legal proceedings against a British bill that is seen as circumventing the withdrawal agreement agreed with the EU.

“This proposal is, by its very nature, a breach of the goodwill commitment contained in the exit agreement,” Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a press release in Brussels.

A letter has been sent to London, to which the British government has a month to reply, before the Commission decides how to proceed.

“Totally natural”

EU Minister Hans Dahlgren (SocDem) sees the Commission’s action as “completely natural” but hopes it will not harm the delicate negotiations on trade, fisheries and other cooperation with the UK that are currently underway.

– The negotiations are said to have been conducted in a decent environment in recent weeks, Dahlgren said at a Swedish press conference in Brussels.

The EU action underscores the increasingly strained relationship with the UK, which was part of the Union until January 31 earlier this year.
