Chief of Staff Håkan Kerrén at Helsingborg Hospital has been working every day of the week since the end of October. Every day he reviews the situation in the region. There are no signs that the number of infected covids is decreasing, on the contrary. On January 2, IVA patients reached a new peak at Scania.
Håkan Kerrén, the hospital’s chief of staff, has been working seven days a week since the end of October. The region has daily reconciliations to get an idea of the situation in the different hospitals.
Christmas has been a difficult time for the health of the region. Since the spread of the infection resumed in early November, more and more people have become so ill that they need intensive care.
On December 14, 27 patients with covid were treated in VAT. Just three weeks later, the number is more than double. On January 2, 60 people were treated intensively for covid-19 in the Skåne region. This is the highest number since the coronavirus reached Sweden.
This means that the covid diagnosis today is close to taking the regular capacity of the entire region of 65 intensive care units.
The pressure on healthcare is very high in Skåne. Helsingborg Hospital has the most difficult situation affecting the entire hospital, Kristianstad Hospital has the strongest pressure on the intensive care unit and large hospitals in Malmö / Lund have a very high burden.
– The pressure is high in Skåne and continues to mount. After the Christmas weekend, he left immediately. Now we wonder what will happen after the New Year’s weekend, says Håkan Kerrén, chief of staff at Helsingborg Hospital.
So far, no hospital in the region has had to take advantage of the so-called crisis situation agreement, which was activated on December 29. Instead, staff show up and take extra shifts. The crisis situation arrangement means that vat care staff can be scheduled in frequent work shifts, sometimes twelve to thirteen hours during 48-hour weeks, and on weekends and nights. It is well paid, but extremely exhausting, explains Håkan Kerrén, who hopes he will not have to use the deal.
– If we can cope with overtime, it gives better resistance. It is already incredibly difficult for our hard working employees. Virtually everyone needs additional training.
Right now, Scanian’s patients are being sent to both Denmark and other counties, but Håkan Kerrén doesn’t say what kind of patients they are.
On Saturday the number of internal medicine places in Ängelholm was increased. This week, the Helsingborg hospital will change to be able to receive even more covid patients. The ambulance service is very hard-working throughout the county, moving patients from hospitals to homes.
Håkan Kerrén is worried.
– I’ve been worried about this for a long time. How high must we go before the curve flattens out?
