The West African cooperation organization Ecowas demands that the Malian junta, which recently came to power through a coup, appoint a civilian president and prime minister before 15 September.
This is what the Nigerian president of the cooperative organization, Mahamadou Issoufou, says after a closed-door meeting in which development in Mali was discussed. Before a head of government is appointed, it will not be relevant to lift the sanctions that Ecowas has imposed on the country.
“It is the duty of our community to help the people of Mali to quickly regain their democratic institutions. The military junta must help us to help Mali,” Mahamadou Issoufou said in connection with the now closed meeting.
Ecowas has previously demanded a transition to a civilian government within a year, while the military junta has been speaking for more than two or three years. Opposition representatives in Mali have said the transition should take place within 18 to 24 months.
