The decision: the zoo wolves have been killed

The Copenhagen Zoo is closing its wolf department. Also, there are plans to phase out their grizzly department.

The decisions led to the deaths of all three wolves at the zoo, all male animals, and one brown bear.

The decision is made after the animal facilities have been evaluated in relation to the zoo’s strategy and the overall plan for the next few years to be implemented.

– When it comes to the 40-year-old wolf facility, there is no question that it is out of date and does not meet the standard we set for animal welfare that we strive for, says Mads Frost Bertelsen, veterinarian and animal manager at Copenhagen Zoo to TV2.

No more grizzly bears

Now the plan is to use the former wolf zone to expand the elephant facilities.

And it’s not just the zoo’s wolf facility that is the subject of new plans.

The grizzly bears will also be phased out, and one of the park’s bears has already been killed – a male bear that was deemed too old to be moved to another zoo.

– We need more space for polar bears. The plan is to let the old polar bear facility grow alongside the current brown bear facility, Mads Frost Bertelsen tells TV2.
