The fact that more people die at covid-19 means that the morgue locations must expand. Stock Photography.
In pandemic crown suites, Stockholm’s ordinary morgue has filled up. Now they have started using new brothels and containers in Stockholm. One problem is that family members wait for funerals.
– A body that can lie for a long time will be in very poor condition, says Jan Olov Andersson, CEO of the Swedish association of cemeteries and crematoriums.
Containers in hospitals and a new hospital in the Globe area. This has been added by the Stockholm Region to cope with the increase in the number of people killed with the corona virus.
– It is true that you take advantage of other opportunities. You have to use other sites besides the normal mortuary, says Jan Olov Andersson, CEO of the Swedish Association of Cemeteries and Crematories.
A total of 1,022 people with confirmed covid-19 have died in the Stockholm region. This since 78 other deaths were reported on Tuesday.
You want to avoid ice rinks
The region now has 2,143 seats in the system. At the end of March, there were around 1,100 places. The fact that the sites have expanded means that the region may not need to locate the deceased in ice caves.
– We have discussed the alternative to using ice shelves and this is plan b. We do not want to end up in a situation where we suddenly have our usual places and therefore have nowhere to deal with the deceased, Joakim Jarnryd, who is responsible for managing the deceased in the Stockholm Region.
The hope is that you will never have to use ice cream parlors as a morgue.
– As it seems now, I think we should avoid it. For example, today we have an influx of 68 deceased and an output of 78, so it is going in the right direction.
Invite family members to follow the law.
There are two things that can make it difficult to manage the deceased in the Stockholm area. One is that if the number of deceased increases significantly, there are currently around 500 places available. The other is if the relatives of the deceased do not follow the funeral law that says they have 30 days to bury the body or carry out the cremation.
– We understand that it is not so good to celebrate a funeral in these times when you have to have social distance. We very respectfully pray that you will care for the deceased and then have a ceremony later, says Joakim Jarnryd.
According to Jan Olov Andersson, there is also an ethical aspect to recovering your relatives from the morgue.
– A body that has to lie down for a long time will be in very bad condition, so it will not be an ethical treatment.
