Suddenly there was silence.

Relatives now testify how contact almost ended with their dementia-sick elders, as the visitor stop was introduced to older residents.

– We do not receive any information at all. They’ve put the lid on, says Jan-Olof.

With the arrest of visitors to the country’s nursing homes, the situation suddenly changed for family members.

Particularly difficult is the situation for those who have an elderly patient with dementia in a home. They seldom manage to maintain contact by calling or answering the phone themselves.

Now several family members testify that Aftonbladet spoke about how the contact with his elders almost ended.

And about the lack of information from residents.

No information at all

Jan-Olof, who is really called something different, has a wife with a progressive dementia disease. She is being cared for in a retirement home managed by A&O Responsibility and Care.

– The information is basically zero, both from management and staff.

His wife cannot communicate or speak on the phone.

– It’s like talking to a three-year-old boy. She does not know what is going on.

Before the crown pandemic, Jan-Olof received a newsletter every week. But since the center of the crowns has entered the accommodation, communication has been almost silent, he says.

The silence has now lasted for weeks.

Only when the wife was infected did the staff hear from her.

– Then they told me that several people in the house had died in covid-19 and that the infection had spread.

What do you think when you hear it?

– How about? You can not do anything.

But he wants to know how widespread the infection is and what steps have been taken.

– You don’t know what’s going on. It feels like they are dark. You must understand that these problems are among our relatives.

“Too bad you failed”

Jan-Olof wants to be called by someone who can tell him how his wife is doing.

– Very little is needed. Weeks can’t go by without anyone listening when my wife can’t.

Do you feel left out as a relative?

– Yes, really, that’s a good description.

Why do you think the information is missing?

– I can’t think of anything, but it’s a shame you haven’t had better success. After all, it’s a total failure that the infection has taken hold of older residents, says Jan-Olof.

A&O Responsibility and Care AB operates 24 residences and residences in Sweden with around 1,500 locations.

Have you covered up as the relatives say?

– No, we have not, but we send information centrally to all the relatives every week. Each business then reports specific information, says CEO Sakarias Mårdh.

“Such a clear challenge”

What is the spread of the infection in their homes?

– It’s very different. It is under control, I would say. We have found infection in about half of the companies. But we will have a large amount of well declared shortly.

How many deaths in covid-19?

– I don’t have that in my head, but unfortunately there are several deaths.

Do they inform their relatives about the infection in individual homes?

– We will notify you in writing if cases are found in our homes, so that family members know what is in the business.

What do you do to maintain contact between dementia sufferers and their families?

– It’s a challenge, of course. There you should have an agreement with your contact person on how the communication should look. So it is an additional responsibility of the staff to resolve the situation.

In this case, the husband lacks information about his wife’s situation.

– It didn’t work if you experience it that way. But the ambition is that it works, that’s why you have a contact person.

The criticism of the lack of communication comes from several family members.

– It’s unfortunate, of course. So it is an extraordinary situation. Then we have to work very hard to improve it, says Sakarias Mårdh.

A&O Responsibility and Care also runs Berga in Solna, which is now being investigated by the Swedish Work Environment Authority. There, every fourth resident, 27 out of 96 elderly, will have died in a short period of time. This is according to a notification made by the Ombudsman for Security together with the Municipal and as reported by Aftonbladet.
