The competence of district nurses is important in the pandemic.

In Sweden, there are around 14,000 district professional nurses.

A qualified nurse can perform a vaccination, but cannot prescribe the vaccine.

A district nurse and other nurses with specialized competence can do both.

In some sparsely populated areas of the country, the need for specially trained nurses who can prescribe the corona vaccine is great; Especially sought after are district nurses who, according to the Swedish District Nurses Association, have noticed increased pressure and increased interest in competition.

In the debate during the pandemic, concerns have been expressed in some regions that district nurses and pediatric nurses are not enough.

Needs covered

In the Västra Götaland region, according to Ann Söderström, Director of Health and Medical Care, there is currently no need to redeploy to district nurses or other nurses with specialized training to prescribe vaccines or vaccinate.

– It’s not what it looks like now. District and pediatric nurses, like physicians, are an important resource and it’s safe to know they exist. At this moment we have covered the needs, but we are following the evolution and we know that the situation can change. There are many with specialized training who have heard of it and are available if the need arises, something they may well do in the future. Of course, we are very grateful that help is available, says Ann Söderström.

It is not necessary to bring a doctor

Christina Hammenfors previously worked as a district nurse and now works as a school nurse at Nordhemsskolan in Gothenburg. He has been in contact with the city of Gothenburg and said he is available.

– I hope that our skills and often our long experience are put to great use, it would save time and money if we were more actively involved in the ongoing vaccination against the crown. We are used to working independently and since we have the authority to prescribe the vaccine, we don’t have to have a doctor in the background, he says.

So far no response has been received.

– We are waiting for information. Management would get in touch if necessary, but we haven’t heard anything yet, which surprises me. You could say that we are on the starting line and waiting for the starting shot. I believe that with our experience we would be an asset, both in the municipalities and in the region, he says.

“Vaccinate for all that the tissues hold”

For Christina, tasks have changed in part during the pandemic and she believes that she and her colleagues could change and participate in vaccination work relatively quickly.

– In my view, it is about vaccinating for everything that the tissues contain. With more hands, more people can be vaccinated, so vaccination of those who are not in the risk group could also be done faster. It’s not about an eternity, but a reinforcement for a few months, says Christina Hammenfors, president of the Gothenburg District Nurses Association.
