This fall’s college entrance exam will be held on Sunday, October 25, confirms government exam coordinator Peter Honeth for TT. For those who want to take the test, it is first come first serve.
– Of course it would have been desirable to give everyone a chance, but then there would have been no proof, he says.
Already on Thursday, there were indications that the university entrance exams will be carried out this fall, but that it will only be in the mill that applies. Now it’s becoming a reality, says test coordinator Peter Honeth.
On Friday, the government implemented an amendment to the ordinance so that the College and University Council (UHR) can limit the number of people who can take the college entrance exam this fall. When the change takes effect on Monday, UHR will make a formal decision to limit the number and take a college entrance exam this fall, says Peter Honeth.
– This means that there will be a university entrance exam on October 25, but there will be a limited number who can write it, 27,600 people.
That’s just over half compared to last fall, but slightly more than was indicated in the Honeth data, which TT reported yesterday. Swedish higher education institutions have also received comments on the proposal.
Limited number of seats
The government has previously decided that only people who do not have a valid college entrance exam result can participate in the fall exam.
Peter Honeth emphasizes that the whole starting point of why this becomes “extraordinary” is being able to provide opportunities for those who really need a college entrance exam to apply for the spring semester.
– The intention is not that it should be a test that everyone writes just because it seems funny or valuable, but that it is for those who really need it before spring.
Therefore, each university will have a limited number of writing places.
– This means that when the number of each university reaches the limit, the opportunities to apply to that particular university are closed. So it can happen at different times.
TT: Do you see the risk of it being perceived as unfair?
– Yes, doing it this way is not without problems. Of course, it would have been desirable to give everyone a chance, but then there would have been no proof, says Peter Honeth.
The proposal has been greeted with “very different enthusiasm” by universities, but all have agreed to take the test, he says.
– Some are not happy at all that this is done at all, it must be said. But everyone remains loyal in this situation. The number to be determined for each organizer has been accepted, and some have even said that they can take a little more than my original proposal.
“Worried about the staff”
Universities have expressed concern about how little time they have to prepare, says Peter Honeth.
– It is very little time to fix premises. But above all, people are concerned about the staff, because there are so many who participate and they have to be trained.
Higher education institutions are also very careful to emphasize that it is infection-proof, Honeth says.
– There they have asked a series of questions and have asked for answers. Most important, of course, the constraints mean you can have much less space between the holes.
Today, the infection control situation looks relatively favorable, but if it were to change generally or locally, there is no guarantee that infection control authorities will not stop testing, Honeth says.
– But as seen today, there is nothing to suggest that it would not be possible to implement it. But one must be aware that obviously we have to follow developments.
Registration for the exam is open from September 25 to October 1.
