The mantra of the national team leadership before Stina Nilsson’s biathlon World Cup debut has been “experience is more important than result”.
Despite that, few could hide their joy at the 27-year-old’s surprising 26th place in Friday’s sprint at Östersund.
– It was very impressive. Impressive, says shooting coach Jonas Johansson, whose smile cannot be lost despite the protection of his mouth.
In terms of driving, Nilsson has shown good form in the IBU Cup, the closest level to the World Cup. On the other hand, few had counted nine out of ten hits on the shooting range, their best performance with the rifle in competitive contexts so far.
– Both filming series were great, but above all I am impressed with the work you do. Dare to be offensive and follow his plan, says Johansson.
TT: Surprised?
– Well, I’m not surprised because I’ve seen that she can shoot that well. But there could also have been many barriers. It rocks up and down a lot, but now it was so good.
“He is a competitive person”
Johansson doesn’t think it was a coincidence that Stina Nilsson did the biathlon competition of her life when she had the opportunity to compete with the world’s elite.
– We have seen it before with Stina, and not only in biathlon. He is a competitive person and can accompany you when necessary.
But now it is important not to get carried away. It is important for Stina Nilsson to focus on her own performance rather than wanting to climb the score and reduce the gap to 56 seconds to lead Tiril Eckhoff.
– It is easy to start looking at the list of results and see that she is quite close to the leader. But you must be humble and focus on it. Otherwise, it is easy to have a few more barriers. But it’s a fun task for her, says Johansson.
– Now we will see how you handle this. It will be very exciting. We have said that the experience will be the most important thing for Stina and this will be a super experience.
Satisfied but collected
Stina Nilsson herself, of course, was pleased with her World Cup debut, but at the same time met before the start of the hunt on Saturday.
– It’s a whole new day with new conditions with interceptions that must be done in a good way. Now I’ll go home and recharge for tomorrow, he said after Friday’s sprint.
The hunt for women begins at 12:15 p.m. Three hours later, at 15.15, it was the men’s turn with Sebastian Samuelsson coming in second, four seconds behind the Italian Lukas Hofer.
