The discussion about the scholarships that the Ibn Rushd study association receives is not new. Swedish Democrats have long pressured the city council to stop money and social resources, Democrats have fought the same battle.
– Ibn Rushd has invited lecturers known for anti-Semitism, misogyny and homophobia over the years. They have even invited pure terrorists, says Sofie Löwenmark, the Democrats’ political secretary, who pushed the issue for the party.
He retired
In the spring, the Social Resources Committee requested a more detailed report from the administration on which partner organizations Ibn Rushd has. It was to be considered during the last board meeting, but management withdrew it at a late stage.
Now the alliance and the Social Democrats, who together have a majority in the committee, have reached a common line, which means there will be no money for Ibn Rushd until further notice.
Jonas Attenius says it was the list of partners they received from the administration that made them see that they had to act.
– To give an example, one partner is the Bellevue Mosque, and we know that it is a center for violent Islamism. The Swedish National Defense College has proven this, among other things. And there are more examples, he says.
You want a new model
In addition to freezing the contribution to Ibn Rushd, the Alliance and the Social Democrats want the administration to take charge of developing a new model for how to distribute scholarships to student unions. The new model requires that the general objectives of the city of collaboration with civil society are complemented with objectives of funds disbursed to contribute to greater equality, integration and tolerance among groups in society.
While they wait for the new model to be implemented, they also want to see significantly tightened control of how disbursed funds are used.
– We have seen that there are deficiencies in the model we have today. Now we want to move on, have better control and go deeper, says Nina Miskovsky (M), president of the social resources committee.
