The Church of Sweden: 20 should be able to go to a funeral

The Church of Sweden wants 20 people, excluding priests and staff, to be able to attend funerals.

In response to the government’s proposal for a maximum ceiling of eight people for public gatherings, the church proposes that funerals be exempted from the provision.

“Since the eight-person restriction came to light, we have received heartbreaking stories of grieving people facing unreasonable decisions about who should be allowed to attend the funeral. A dignified farewell is essential for the work of mourning ”, says Bishop Antje Jackelén according to a press release.

The response to the query of 20 funeral participants was adopted after many organs of the Church of Sweden had something to say.

– Among other things, the bishops have spoken among themselves. It’s a team effort, Jackelén’s press contact Daniel Bramsell tells TT.

The Church of Sweden also sees the risk that many will postpone the funeral due to the limitation of eight participants. During the current period, four weeks from November 24, 7,000 funerals are planned.
