The complainant organization claims that its children would undergo a planned heart operation at the Children’s Heart Center of the Drottning Silvia Children’s and Adolescent Hospital in 2019.
But the operation was postponed seven times because the intensive care unit was full and other emergency operations would take priority.
He showed lack of capacity and before the boy had the opportunity to perform the operation, he suffered cardiac arrest and died at home.
Ivo, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, does not consider it reasonable that the operation had to be postponed several times, and writes in its decision that the care provider has failed in its responsibility to plan, direct and control the business.
Majority breaks
The patient’s history does not indicate why the doctor decided to postpone the operation several times.
Based on Ivo’s decision, there have been several shortcomings regarding how the patient’s history was handled. Among other things, the hospital has not recorded which medical evaluations have been carried out and which measurement values are missing.
In general, the authority criticizes the hospital on several points.
Documentation deficiencies
According to Ivo, the hospital also violated the Patient Data Act. Among other things, the hospital should only have documented deviations from the measured values during the child’s check-ups and not all the measured values as they should.
Therefore, it is not possible to say whether the child has received adequate care or not: the surface is too thin, according to Ivo.
Still, this means that the hospital has violated sections of both the Patient Safety Act and the Health Care Act.
Ivo has closed the case, but will follow up on the measures that the care provider has put in place due to the aforementioned deficiencies.
GT has sought a responsible operations manager who could not be reached.
