The Call: Vote for the Thickest Bear in the Park

Anyone who clicks on the Katmai National Park website next week can see photos and vote for the bear they think is the thickest. The competition, which starts on Wednesday, is organized once a year and is called Fat Bear Week.

Last year’s winner was Holly the bear:

The competition is a way of remembering the natural riches of the national park and how well the bears that live there thrive. According to the park’s website, more brown bears than humans live in the region, which is also known for its volcanoes.

In Sweden, however, Katmai National Park, located in Alaska, is perhaps best known for the Werner Herzog film Grizzly man. The film is based on the true story of documentary maker Timothy Treadwell, who lived with the park bears for thirteen summers and made a movie about them. Tragically, one of the bears ended up killing him.
