On Sunday, the Norwegian Institute for Infectious Disease Control confirmed to the National Institute of Public Health that two people who arrived from the UK in early December had been confirmed infected with the new mutation in sars-covid2, called N501Y.
News that the new mutation would be “up to 70 percent more contagious” than the new coronavirus came from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who quoted his health minister Matt Hancock on December 19.
The Norwegian Infection Control Authority notes that it is too early to say whether the new variant is actually much more contagious that it will change the situation and refers to the fact that the mutation has existed in Denmark for some time without affecting the spread of infection there.
“At present, only in parts of England is it believed that the variant may have contributed to the rapid growth of the epidemic. Research is underway to be able to say something certain about it. In Denmark the virus has been in place for several weeks without changing the situation regarding the infection, ”writes Line Vold, department director of the National Institute of Public Health in a press release.
In Saturday also noted Niklas Arnberg, a professor of virology at Umeå University and president of the Swedish Society for Virology, said it is too early to say how this is due to the infectious nature of the British mutation.
The CDC also wrote in a report on December 22 that it was impossible to know if the new mutation had entered the United States because only 51,000 of a total of 17 million infected in the United States had their viruses tested.
The CDC also stated that it is “not known” if the mutation has any effect on how the infection spreads.
The new mutation of the virus It has also been discovered in Australia, Japan, Ireland, and Germany. In the case of Japan, all known cases, five of them, have entered the country after trips to Great Britain. In total, the mutation has been detected in about ten European countries.
On Saturday the first Swedish case was confirmed.
