The British crown mutation, which is reportedly significantly more contagious than previous variations, has taken a firm hold in Sweden.
– The prevalence of this variant is probably relatively high. We have cases that are not linked to travelers and have probably had it for a long time, says Sara Byfors during Tuesday’s press conference.
She believes the British mutation is likely to eventually dominate among variants of the virus.
Indicates that the spread of the mutation has gained momentum in Sweden
The Swedish Public Health Agency reports that four regions, Västra Götaland, Skåne, Gävleborg and Västmanland, have carried out a comprehensive analysis of 2,200 positive covid samples. The British mutation turned out to be responsible for 250 of the cases.
Closer to 11 percent.
– In Sweden, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions on regional spread. But the fact that so many cases have been discovered in the random checks indicates that, as in other European countries, we have a greater spread of the British variant of the virus, says unit director Sara Byfors in a press release.
The Public Health Agency compares itself to other European countries where the infection has taken root, where they now have an incidence of the British mutation that accounts for up to 90 percent of cases.
New E484K mutation bypasses the immune system
The Swedish Public Health Agency states that the state of knowledge indicates that the British variant is more contagious than other variants, although it is unclear whether it causes a more serious illness.
At the same time, the British media are reporting that a new mutation in the South African virus variant, called E484K, may bypass the body’s immune system.
A study from the University of Cambridge showed that ten times more antibodies were needed to neutralize E484K than for the usual variants, reports Sky News.
“Our research shows that vaccines are probably less effective against this E484K mutation,” Professor Ravi Gupta told Sky News.
