With less than three months to go until Britain’s final departure from the EU, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a telephone meeting on Saturday on the state of the Brexit negotiations.
The two leaders spoke for half an hour and then stated in a short joint statement that they agreed on the importance of reaching an agreement for a future strategic relationship between the EU and the UK.
At the same time, it was emphasized that they still have “significant differences of opinion”, including on issues related to competition and water fishing rights.
The two have now urged their respective chief negotiators to “work hard to bridge differences of opinion.”
Boris Johnson has previously said his ambition is to have a full settlement proposal ready by October 15.
