The message arrived on Monday. At a press conference, Interior Minister Mikael Damberg announced that the border with Denmark would be closed.
– We do this to protect staff who will be forced to spend Christmas and New Years in hospitals and emergency rooms in Sweden.
But according to Mikael Damberg, the closure of the border with Denmark is not due to concerns about the new variant of the virus that spreads mainly in the UK but also appeared in Denmark, but rather to the risk of Danes traveling to Sweden as much of Copenhagen has been closed.
– There is an obvious risk that Danes will be attracted to traveling to Sweden to buy, he says.
“Trains almost empty”
Kvällposten photographer Fritz Schibli was at Hyllie station south of Malmö on Tuesday morning.
– It’s very quiet here. Trains arriving from Copenhagen are almost empty, so border police checks are quick, he says.
But on a couple of trains, he was able to see the police turn away people who were allowed to be led to another platform and onto a train to Denmark.
– They were taken immediately, says Fritz Schibli.
According to the local police, they do not expect many passengers and that they will be able to handle it with normal personnel.
This applies now, according to the police.
The police have released the following information about the closed border.
The entry ban will apply to foreigners traveling to Sweden from the UK or Denmark.
However, these categories of people will be admitted:
Swedish citizens.
Those who travel from Denmark and can prove that they live or work in Sweden.
Professional road users who drive goods.
Those who do not comply with this will be rejected. This means they can take the next train back or receive instructions on how to drive back.
Nor are so-called transit journeys allowed, for example to and from Bornholm via Sweden.
