The grenade was found Sunday afternoon by people who were “fishing with magnets” in the Ljungbyholm area, south of Kalmar.
– We sent a patrol to the scene and they took a photo that was sent to the duty officer, says Rickard Lundqvist at the police command center in the southern region.
The image was then sent to the National Bomb Guard for evaluation. And experts believed that the danger with the object was so great that the bomb squad was dispatched.
– We have had surveillance on the site in the meantime, says Rickard Lundqvist.
The bomb squad arrived in Ljungbyholm during the night and at 10:31 pm it was announced that the old grenade would be deactivated.

In a post on Instagram at 10 p.m., the police write:
Tonight, a “magnetic fisherman” pulled a grenade out of a stream. Our task is usually to go to the site to do an initial hazard assessment.
In this case, the object was so rusty that it was difficult to judge.
The photos were sent to the National Bomb Protection in Malmö, which made the assessment that it should be handled as sharp.
At the time of writing this report, the National Bomb Protection is on the way to make its own assessment and possibly blow up the object on the spot. “
The grenade was detonated
At around 10:50 p.m. the grenade probably detonated. A person living near the Hossmo junction on the E22 heard a loud bang.
– It wasn’t an ordinary explosion. It was felt at home, the person says.
Police confirm that the bomb squad was fulfilling its mission at the same time.
– At 10:48 p.m. the object was deactivated. The bomb squad has accomplished its mission and is ready on the spot, says Rickard Lundqvist.
– We no longer have surveillance. The case is closed.
