Lyon, with Finnish goalkeeper Katriina Talaslahti on the squad, is the best club team in Europe. Lyon expanded their set of titles when they defeated Wolfsburg in the Champions League final 3-1.
Two known teams met in the Champions League final. Lyon, the great dominant in Europe at the moment, and two-time champion Wolfsburg, who also lost the final in both 2016 and 2018.
The last two final matches of the team have been decided in extra time or on penalties, but this time 90 minutes was enough.
Lyon firmly associated the victory already in the first half. Eugénie Le Sommer scored a goalkeeper’s return to 1-0 in the 25th minute and just before half-time Japanese midfielder Saki Kumagai scored the 2-0 from distance.
Wolfsburg didn’t create a really dangerous scoring opportunity in the first half, but after the break the team washed a position and then came the reduction.
Lyon goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi dropped the ball behind a post and finished with Alexandra Popp heading for 1-2.
Katriina Talaslahti sat on the bench throughout the match and watched her colleague Bouhaddi hold on tight after the reduction. Wolfsburg’s draw was missed and, with minutes remaining, Sara Björk Gunnarsdottir failed at 3-1, giving Lyon their fifth straight title.
