The excursion ended in tragedy for the 85-year-old man in a wheelchair.

In a careless moment, the wheelchair rolled down a slope and tipped over. The woman was injured and later died in hospital.

The municipality has now reported the incident at the nursing home.

It was in mid-July that a caregiver at a nursing home in Uppsala took one of the residents, the 85-year-old, for a walk.

During the excursion, the resident saw a nice vegetable plantation and asked the caretaker what kind of vegetable it was. Then the keeper leaned over to take a closer look at the plantation and released the wheelchair for a brief but fateful moment. Without having applied the brake.

When the caretaker turned again, the wheelchair had run off the road down a slope and had tipped over. The 85-year-old man was awake and talking after the accident, but had suffered several fractures.

A few days later, the woman passed away at the hospital.

Municipality: Tragic accident

The municipality does not have access to the hospital’s medical records and does not have the exact cause of death. But according to Lars Östberg, the injuries the 85-year-old received in the case contributed to his death.

– We see this as a tragic accident that we deeply regret. Needless to say, our staff has broken routines in this case, as you did not lock the wheelchair when you released your attention. It is a matter of a second, but it is too long in this case, says Lars Östlund, area manager of the elderly administration in Uppsala municipality.

After the incident, the municipality submitted a report from Lex Maria to Ivo, the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate. There it is claimed that there have been deficiencies in the routines of the accommodation, which are now hardening.

– We have reviewed the instructions we have for outdoor walks and clarified that a wheelchair is never left without a key. Either roll and then hold it or stop and then lock it, says Lars Östlund.

The caregiver feels bad

The street park administration has also been asked to put up a fence along the road loop, to prevent future accidents.

Lars Östlund says the caregiver who dated the 85-year-old is upset after what happened.

– He has also charged a high price to the staff, of course, and receives help from the occupational health care.
