Saudi Arabia and Qatar have agreed to reopen the airspace and borders between the two countries.

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad al-Nasser al-Sabah said on national television that the opening of the border would take effect Monday night, although the agreement itself would not be signed until Tuesday.

The news came before the annual summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Kuwait and the United States have acted as mediators in the approximately three and a half years of conflict. For Washington, it is important that the Gulf states can show a united front against Iran. According to US sources, Jared Kushner, adviser and son-in-law to President Donald Trump, will be present at the signing of the agreement.

It was in mid-2017 that Saudi Arabia led an alliance of countries that imposed diplomatic, trade and travel embargoes on Qatar. The countries accused Qatar of being too close to the Saudi archenemy Iran and of supporting terrorism, something that Qatar denied, claiming that the objective of the embargo was to undermine the country’s independence.
