Speed: “There is no one else”

He runs ten meters per second. With a wand in his hands.

The difference between Armand Duplantis 2020 and Armand Duplantis 2019 is speed.

– Today there is something called laser measurement. And I haven’t seen anyone who has come close to the speeds it has, says Alhaji Jeng.

– Its speed on the approach path is exceptional. And what makes it even more exceptional is that it has that speed in the starting position, with the rod in hand, and when it comes to preparing the insertion, that is, in the movement where the rod lowers and has the arms in tall.

The force: “It has been able to raise the bar of the rod”

Armand Duplantis has gotten stronger since the breakthrough two years ago (European Championship gold at 6.05). It is visible and it pays dividends.

– What has mainly resulted is the speed and that it has become smoother in the race, which means that it has been able to raise the bar on pole. It’s easy to run fast and stay high, but if you don’t hit right off the exit, you’ll burn all the speed you’ve accumulated, says Alhaji Jeng.

– Strength for him is about being able to obtain dividends in effect. He is so incredibly good at that. The force has allowed him to use stiffer rods and taller sockets. The push it receives gives it greater power.

The feeling: “It’s like a cat in the air”

– It’s like a cat in the air.

This is how Alhaji Jeng sums up the flight of “Mondo” over record heights.

– He has that feeling in his fingertips and he has an incredible feeling of hope, which I would say is his greatest talent.

– He has jumped an incredible amount of pole and knows exactly how to ride if he’s a little crooked or out of phase. He has an incredible sense of where he is in the air, it is not something he sees but something he feels. He is a master composing all the technical details: the approach, the insertion, the rotation and the flight when the rod has been straightened. You don’t think, but it works on autopilot.

The psyche: “No tendency to doubt anywhere”

How can a 20-year-old be so cool? Armand Duplantis reaches record heights seemingly without nerves, offers himself and shines with confidence. In no time, he has become the biggest star in athletics and seems to enjoy it.

Jeng’s explanation: The passion for pole vault.

– He has had it since he was little and that passion has made him dedicate a lot of time to pole vaulting, he is aware of the different ways of jumping, of how others jump but he has also developed his own “spin” in it. I think you’ve built a whole and a security, resulting in this incredible self-confidence.

– He has no tendency to doubt anywhere.

The endorsement: “I couldn’t have been in better hands”

Spine meters have been written about the Duplantis sports family. With right.

– Couldn’t have been in better hands, says SVT expert on father Greg Duplantis, mother Helena Duplantis and all the support around the Swedish-American.

– His father was a world jumper in the 80’s. He can pole vault with the tips of his fingers. His mother (with an athletic background) can train at her fingertips.

– They have been able to adapt very well to Armand’s functioning and to his physical and mental capacity. You have the feeling that he feels very good and confident as a human being, and that is the most important factor in being able to perform.
