As of Friday, restaurants and bars are not allowed to serve alcoholic beverages after 10 PM and, in addition, guests must leave the premises and restaurants close before 10:30 PM.

GP went out into town to see how the new regulations are enforced.

In Haket, it is already half empty at 9:30 p.m.

– Not like a normal Friday night, but as we expected. We didn’t think people would come in much earlier and party a lot until ten, but it would be a quiet night, says Thomas Ljusberg at the bar.

To avoid loss if possible when the restaurant has to close early, Haket chooses to open a little earlier.

– We open two instead of four in the afternoons. On weekends we can win a bit, but it’s still a real slap in the face, this he says.

I think the ban is wrong

A couple of blocks away, the troubadour sings the last song of the evening at Byns Bistro. In the incipient drizzle outside, Annika smokes. She thinks the new ban is completely wrong.

– What they are looking for are those over 20 years old. They don’t go home at ten, they go to an apartment and sit 40 people in a study. It would have been better if they sat in the tavern, where there is a distance between tables and order, he says.

However, the restaurants on the long streets follow the new rules. At 10:30 p.m., almost all the guests are out and the cleaning begins. A happy group rolls Tredje långgatan forward, on the road from Brygghuset.

– They did well, we didn’t even get a last order, so a compliment to them. Now we go home and drink drinks, so it was early in the pub and after the pre-party … God, how awful we are! We really confirm the prejudices about young people, says Amani Smith.

Little London closes at 10:00 PM and opens at 11:00 PM

An alternative for the gang would have been to go to Avenyn and Little London, which opts to complete the ban, closing at 10.30pm and then reopening at 11pm, but then no alcohol sales.

Several Stockholm restaurants have the same strategy, writes Aftonbladet. Restaurants in Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg are also considering the same paths, writes Helsingborgs Dagblad.

According to the government memorandum, the liquor stop at the restaurant after 10 pm will apply until the end of February 2021.
