The series “A suitable boy” has provoked emotions in a state of India due to a kiss scene with a temple as a background. In addition, the two who are kissing are a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy, which has led both politicians and individuals in the state of Madhya Pradesh to demand that Netflix remove the series from the streaming service.
The series was originally made for the BBC by director Mira Nair and is based on a novel by one of India’s most popular writers, Vikram Seth. Narottam Mishra, Madhya Pradesh’s Interior Minister, said on Twitter that he had reported the series to the police and would see if legal action could be taken because the film had “hurt the feelings of people across an entire region.”
Popular culture describing Hindu-Muslim relations in India appears to be increasingly criticized. Last month, a major jewelry company that did a commercial with a Hindu-Muslim family withdrew its film after receiving death threats.
