Annie Lööf is demanding a two-week closure of department stores and shopping centers and is supported by virology professor Fredrik Elgh.

Anders Tegnell was hesitant about the proposal when asked on the SVT agenda:

– We do not know what effect it will have, but we know for sure that in a few weeks we will not have any amount of vaccine that can stop the spread of the infection.

The center’s leader, Annie Lööf, was interviewed on Agenda Sunday night and demanded stricter restrictions immediately.

– So that the third wave does not turn into a tsunami, tough measures must be taken early, he said.

It demands the closure of, for example, shopping centers and department stores, with compensation of one hundred per cent, including salary costs, to the companies affected.

– I imagine two or three weeks. This is what the pandemic law gives the government a chance to do.

Lööf talked about seat belts

Annie Lööf criticizes Stefan Löfven for being late.

– The government has been left behind. You don’t wear your seat belt in the crash, but you do wear it for preventive purposes before.

In addition to the closure, the Center Party demands, among other things, national guidelines for oral protection in indoor environments and that a special pandemic coordinator be appointed.

– When we now see the light in the tunnel with the vaccines in spring, it is the right time to close for a few weeks to then be able to open faster. It is not possible to enter as the government has done to make it last.

Fredrik Elgh agreed

The center leader was supported by Fredrik Elgh, professor of virology at Umeå University.

– As Annie Lööf mentioned earlier, it is time for a shorter period of stricter restrictions to reduce the spread of the infection. Sweden’s increase in the spread of the infection is quite strong. We must do what our neighbors do and fight this to a manageable level.

Fredrik Elgh also took over the schools. He doesn’t want to see a total closure, but he suggests a tougher adaptation even into elementary and middle school.

– It is good that we have distance education in high school and high school for a while. It is important that we reduce the time children are in school during the three to four week period that is actually required.

Tegnell’s answer: we don’t know yet

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell participated in the program via video and responded to demands for closure from Annie Lööf and Fredrik Elgh. Is that what is needed? asked the host.

– We don’t know yet, Tegnell replied.

– We’ve added a lot of new restrictions in the last few weeks and actually since Christmas just to limit people from getting to know each other. We actually don’t know what full closures actually do.

– Many countries with total closure are experiencing the same increase as Sweden. Not dramatic, but an increase that we must take very seriously. This is the case in companies with total closure where it obviously does not have such a great effect.

Anders Tegnell, however, opened for the closure of, for example, shopping malls locally.

– Now we already have many going. These places are strictly regulated so there is no congestion. It goes without saying that we are closely monitoring this situation. If we increase the spread of the infection and can connect it to places like this, now there are very good opportunities to close so that these measures can be taken regionally. Do not turn it off everywhere, it has been extremely costly for the health of the countries where it has been done.

Warned by simple solutions

Tegnell cautioned against believing in simple solutions.

– You have to think very carefully to try to find the measures that you can take with the least possible negative effects. Do not think that there can be a measure as simple as closing the company completely. We cannot do that and it would also have very significant negative effects.

When do we see vaccines slow the spread of infection so that it is noticeable? asked the host.

– That’s the problem. Now there are many who say that we will close completely for a few weeks. We do not know what effect it will have, but we know for sure that in a few weeks we will not have any amount of vaccine that can stop the spread of the infection. We will only get those amounts sometime from May to June.
