According to Tegnell, it is not the task of the Public Health Agency to direct care for the elderly.
– Now we are not the ones who guide, there are other authorities and the activities themselves who are doing it. “We were very clear that the elderly were vulnerable and that all actors must work to improve this situation so that they are not exposed to this spread of infection,” says Morgon in P1.
Tegnell says the Swedish Public Health Agency could have been a bit clearer about the risks, but insists that it is not their responsibility to guide the care of the elderly.
– VHe was very clear that the elderly were vulnerable. We knew that from both China and Italy at an early stage, he tells the radio.
Additionally, Tegnell says it remains to be seen in future research what could have been done better to protect the elderly from infection.
– I think it is good that now they point out the problems that have existed in the care of the elderly, which they also point out that they have existed for decades. We can only hope this leads to a comprehensive improvement, he tells the radio.
“Very difficult to protect”
Despite harsh criticism from the crown commission, Anders Tegnell believes that Sweden has improved in protecting its elderly population, even if there is a need for improvement.
– Then it is very difficult to protect. There are probably no countries, because now we also see Germany, which in the spring managed to protect its nursing homes well, even those that were badly affected during this period. So obviously it’s very difficult, says Morgon at P1.
