– Now we know that there is a greater risk for pregnant women and we want to avoid them needing intensive care because in the worst case it can have serious consequences for both the mother and the child, says Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist with the Health Agency Public, in a press release.

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency The announcement comes after receiving unpublished information from Swedish studies showing a certain increased risk of pregnant women suffering from blood clots and poisoning during pregnancy.

– Why don’t we really know. But it is not uncommon for pregnant women to become more seriously ill with various infectious diseases. It’s no surprise, says Anders Tegnell.

According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, the risk of serious diseases can also increase in combination with other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. The advice to be very careful applies to all pregnant women, but especially from the 36th week of pregnancy and before delivery.

– The big risks actually arise, especially when you enter and have a continuous infection at birth, says Anders Tegnell.

In the press release, the Swedish Public Health Agency writes that pregnant women should be very careful to follow general recommendations. Nor should they be exposed to the risk of infection in their workplace, something that occurs mainly in medical care. The Swedish Work Environment Authority stated in early September that pregnant women should not be allowed to care for covid patients. The state of knowledge was then more confused, but then the decision was made regarding the precautionary principle.

If this means Anders Tegnell cannot answer that pregnant women will have to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus earlier, when there is a vaccine.

– It depends on how much data you enter and how the Medical Products Agency responds, Anders Tegnell said during the joint press conference on Thursday.

– We can only hope to know relatively soon if this is a vaccine that we can use in pregnant women.

Also, pregnant women should get vaccinated against the usual seasonal flu, according to the Swedish Public Health Agency.
