Norway has fared better during the corona pandemic with 265 deaths compared to 5,851 in Sweden. According to Frode Forland, head of infection control in Norway, the explanation is the rapid closure of the company in March.
A quick shutdown meant fewer infections in the community and therefore reduced the risk of the coronavirus reaching older people and at-risk groups, according to Forland.
“Too early to compare”
But according to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, it is too early to compare Norway and Sweden.
– We continue to insist that this is a very complex situation and there are many reasons why it is so different between Sweden and Norway.
Anders Tegnell does not want to review the Norwegian efforts against covid-19.
– I do not think I should review the Norwegian initiatives in any way, but based on the evaluation of the Swedish initiatives, we can be clear that we do not believe that a closure would have affected the spread of the infection in nursing homes, says Anders Tegnell.
“Comparable to Holland”
You said yesterday that Sweden’s high death toll in relation to, for example, Norway could be due to the force with which the flu has affected countries in previous years. Reject many experts, including Fore Forland, do you stick to what you said?
This was from an article that was published recently in which they pointed out 15 different reasons why the death toll in Sweden seems higher than in other countries.
– They are very comparable to, for example, the Netherlands, which seems to have a pandemic very similar to ours, which does not resemble the Norwegian development. There were also major closures, so I really think we should wait before making major assessments and comparisons with different countries. And if this article was wrong, it should be discussed with the authors of the article.
“Better conditions”
Anders Tegnell also gives his forecast for the fall and does not believe that the increase is equivalent to that which occurred in early spring.
– No, we have much better conditions to deal with an increase, we have tests in place, we have a well-functioning health system, we have the opportunity to track infections, he says.
