Sweden’s tactics against the coronavirus have attracted considerable media attention worldwide.
When most communities have closed completely, Sweden has kept schools, clothing stores, hairdressers, and other things open.
Anders Tegnell, however, Foreign Minister Ann Linde has been able to answer curious questions from the foreign media repeatedly.

Now, Tegnell has hosted the YouTube channel of world-famous comedian and TV show host Trevor Noah and his show “The Daily Social Detachment Show.”
Tegnell participated in the program via Skype from Stockholm Central Station on Monday. During the 10-minute interview, Trevor Noah asks how the strategy has come to be and compares the highest number of deaths in Sweden with Norway and Denmark.
– How do you conclude that it is worth taking the risk, having children in school, that people should continue to work, even though it will initially lead to higher death rates? Are they the decisions that epidemiologists and governments have to make, do you think? Trevor Noah asks.
– No, we never count high mortality rates initially. That is wrong. We expected more people to get sick, but the death toll was a surprise, “responds Anders Tegnell.
Tegnell’s answer: retirement homes are a big problem
He further explains that Sweden’s high death rate is largely due to the fact that the infection has entered nursing homes.
– We really think that our older residents could keep him away more. It is not that Sweden is the only country that has problems with housing for the elderly. Even if we do our best, it is not enough. But we don’t put lives on other people’s lives, that’s not how we work, says Tegnell.
The comedian, with his nearly 8 million followers on YouTube and who leads the talk show “The Daily show” in the United States every day, asks if more countries could or should follow Sweden’s tactics. But Tegnell is doubtful.
– Some things may apply to other countries, but others cannot. We are increasingly confident that closing schools is not the right method; schools do not appear to be a driver in the spread of infection. So, some things, absolutely, he says, and adds:
– But it takes a long time to build trust between the authorities and the people. People have confidence in us and in our guidelines. They do what we say, unlike what you see in many other countries, says Tegnell.
