The next few weeks are critical in terms of the spread of the coronavirus, according to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell. At the same time, it is too early to draw any conclusions about how the Christmas and New Year weekend affected the spread of the infection.

Another 258 deaths with confirmed covid-19 have been reported in Sweden, announces the Public Health Agency. A total of 469,748 people in Sweden have been confirmed to be infected.

The spread of the infection is at risk of increasing significantly in the country when people return to their workplaces after the Christmas holidays, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell.

– It seems we have had a reduction during the weekends. That may be partially true, but we’ll take it with a pinch of salt, Tegnell says at today’s joint press conference.

Health care remains severely overburdened in many parts of the country.

“Unfortunately, it is similar with the number of deaths per week, they are at a high level and relatively stable,” says Tegnell.

So far, one person in Sweden has been found infected with the South African coronavirus mutation and 13 with the British mutation.

– The vast majority have been discovered in the extended monitoring we do. One of them so far has no travel connection, so there are also background cases that we cannot trace back to the UK, although they are very few. We have not seen a large spread of the infection around the cases, but the regions are still investigating the cases and following them very carefully, says Tegnell and continues:

– Of course, there is a very high probability that we will continue to find cases in the increased surveillance that we are doing right now against South Africa and the UK.
