Corona infection in Vadstena has increased by 700 percent since last week.

The infection is mainly transmitted by teenagers now, says City Council Chairman Peter Eriksson.

– Sometimes young people come together in a different way, he says.

Between week 11 and week 12, the number of crown falls in Vadstena Township increased by 700 percent.

– It is very unfortunate and worrying, of course, says the chairman of the city council Peter Eriksson (M).

A total of 436 people have fallen ill with covid-19 in the municipality, of which 40 in the last week.

– The infection is now transmitted between younger people and their parents, he says.

High school closes

This mainly applies to students from the municipality’s only upper secondary school who have become ill. Vadstena first tried to introduce a rotating schedule so that one year at a time was taught at the site.

– But it did not give enough effect, says Peter Eriksson.

Since Thursday, March 25, teaching has gone completely digital for two weeks. Then you must evaluate the result and the need.

– The corridors of the schools are difficult to manage, they are built to fill with students, says Peter Eriksson.

– Sports holidays have certainly influenced this. Sometimes young people socialize in a different way, especially during the holidays. They don’t get particularly sick, but they can be carriers and more vulnerable.

Many sick teachers

The Östergötland region, to which Vadstena belongs, has fully vaccinated just over 6 percent of the adult population. 73 percent of those over the age of 90 have received two doses of the vaccine. The same applies to a third of the population between 80 and 89 years old.

– We do not have any infection in our nursing homes, risk groups have received vaccinations and it is very good to know.

– But like I said, high school students also affect their parents and teachers. So we’ve had a lot of sick teachers and it’s hard to find substitutes, says Peter Eriksson.

But Vadstena, which has been described as a “city of solidarity” since the Middle Ages, has a population that follows restrictions well, thinks Peter Eriksson.

– Care is in the spinal cord of most people. We have had a large mental hospital where almost every member of every family worked at one time, so we take it seriously. In a small municipality, everyone helps each other and throws the straw.
