Tasks: US spied on Swedish targets

As early as 2015, an employee of the Danish intelligence service Forsvarets Efterretningstjeneste raised the alarm in several reports that the NSA used the collaboration of spies to obtain information about ministries and private activities in Denmark. Among the targets are the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

Reports warned that there could be illegalities in the spy collaboration, which involved retrieving information from Danish Internet cables. This is stated by several independent sources with knowledge of the secret reports to the radio company.

At the same time, the whistleblower warned that the NSA had also spied on targets in other countries, including Sweden, Germany, France, Norway, and the Netherlands.

– The NSA has used cable cooperation for espionage directed against Denmark’s closest allies and previously also against Danish interests and targets, says a source wishing to remain anonymous on Danmarks Radio.

The NSA, among other things they have used the collaboration of spies to obtain information on the Swedish fighter jet Jas Gripen and the European fighter jet Eurofighter. Both aircraft have been in the running to become Denmark’s new fighter jet.

However, it has not been possible for Danmarks Radio to establish exactly what information the NSA was looking for, or how they may have used the information.

Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist does not want to comment on the information.

– Defense Minister refrains from commenting because it comes from anonymous sources, says Toni Eriksson, press secretary of Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist to TT.

Saab Communications Director Sebastian Carlsson assures in a statement to DN that “the information is not united” and that they cannot rule out that “the actors on this issue have their own intelligence agenda to generate conflict.”

“This means that Saab in this situation does not want to comment further on the subject or can assess whether it is our business to declare.”

He continues:

“What we can say in general is that various players around the world are showing interest in the Swedish high-tech industry, as reported by the security police in their latest annual report. We are well aware of this and have been doing extensive security work for a long time to prevent strategic information from falling into the wrong hands. “
