The information comes from a source close to the criminal investigation, reports the AFP news agency.

Paty was killed last Friday in the Parisian suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, near the school where she worked. Then they cut off his head. The alleged perpetrator, Abdullakh Anzoroven, an 18-year-old Russian of Chechen origin, was shot dead by the police in connection with the intervention.

Traced to Idlib Province

Before the deadly attack, Paty gave a lecture on freedom of speech, showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Students who did not want to see the images were offered to leave the classroom or were asked to close their eyes before the images were shown.

Soon some of the students’ parents were outraged that Muhammad cartoons had been shown and demanded that Samuel Paty be fired.

The identity of Anzorov’s Russian-speaking contact is unknown, but according to the Parisian newspaper, investigators have traced the contact back to Idlib province in northwestern Syria via an IP address.

Seven suspects

The area is the well-known headquarters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has its roots in an extension of the Iraqi branch of the extremist terrorist network al-Qaeda. But the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which monitors the war in Syria from Britain, has previously reported that thousands of jihadists with French and British nationalities, as well as Russians with Chechen backgrounds, are also in the area.

Seven people, including two teenage students from the school where Samuel Paty worked, will be charged under the criminal classification of “preparation for terrorist murder,” French anti-terror prosecutor Jean-François Ricard announced on Wednesday.

The murder has sparked strong reactions and led to widespread demonstrations in France.
