Vice President Mike Pence is said to have had a telephone conversation with his successor Kamala Harris and later congratulated her.
US Vice President Mike Pence is said to have had a phone conversation with incoming Vice President Kamala Harris and then congratulated his successor.
Pence is also said to have offered to help make the shift of power as smooth as possible next week.
Information about the phone call, which is said to have taken place on Thursday, is unofficial but comes from anonymous sources to various US outlets, including The New York Times.
If this is correct, it is a contact at the highest level to date between the outgoing and incoming administrations in the United States.
Trump to Florida
President Donald Trump should not have heard from his successor Joe Biden after he won the election in November last year. On the contrary, Trump has rejected the result of the election and, without proof, claimed that Biden and the Democrats “stole” the election through fraud, from him and the Republicans.
Trump has previously announced that he will not be present when Biden is sworn in on Wednesday, January 20. Pence has said he will be in his place.
An official has confirmed to the AFP news agency that Trump will fly from Washington on Wednesday morning before the presidential inauguration takes place.
Then he is expected to go to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Frosty condition
The relationship between Trump and Pence has deteriorated significantly after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building on January 6, after the president urged them to go there.
Pence was inside the building when the mob entered. He presided over the congress where members would formally declare Joe Biden the winner of the presidential election.
Before the meeting, which was previously considered formal, Trump asked his vice president to stop Congress from approving Biden. But Pence refused, citing he had no constitutional right to stop approval.
When Congress was stormed, mob folks were heard yelling, “Hang Mike Pence.”
