A new kidnapping of schoolchildren is said to have taken place in Katsina state in northern Nigeria. It comes just days after the hundreds of children who were abducted from the same area last week are said to have been released.
According to a local police spokesman, gunmen abducted about 80 children on Saturday as the children were on their way home in Mahuta village after a religious gathering. The AFP news agency reports that now a citizen guard has managed to save the kidnapped children.
Much is still unclear, including about the first kidnapping, which took place last Friday when a school boarding school was robbed by gunmen on motorcycles. The kidnapped children were released in less than a week and were able to return home on Friday.
Northwest Nigeria has long been plagued by criminal gangs looting villages, stealing livestock, burning houses and kidnapping people in the hope of ransom. At the same time, many of the events are difficult to verify, as information from the Nigerian authorities and the media is often highly uncertain.
