Swedish star Anna Bernholm pursues an Olympic medal, without cruciate ligament

Much of his cruciate ligament was injured in Paris and what little he had left during a camp in Austria.

Now Anna Bernholm can do without the cruciate ligament in her right knee.

For the 29-year-old, nothing changes.

She continues to aim for a medal in the 70-pound judo class at the Tokyo Olympics, which was postponed until this summer.

– Medal at the Olympics? It is the biggest you can get in judo, where the Olympics are at the top of all competitions. It’s clear that it’s difficult, but it’s something I’m investing in, he says.

– It is clear that it was not a fun message to receive, because it can be quite good to have a cruciate ligament. But how it feels right now, I absolutely believe that it will be possible to drive without it as well.

Without surgery

In the fall of 2019, Anna Bernholm ranked second in the world, was brought as one of the first Swedes to the Olympics and was seen as a great medal jump in Tokyo.

Then the landslide began.

In February 2020, he injured his cruciate ligament at the Grand Slam competition in Paris. Discussions about the surgery started right away, but when Bernholm was ill for almost three months, it never became relevant, and then doctors at the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) thought she was stable enough in her knee, that she was so well that would. to work. to lead like this until the Olympics.

– They were divided, they were not completely sure, but considering the situation and how much time had passed, they thought it better not to operate, says the manager of the national team, Robert Eriksson.

TT: And with the result in hand …

– Yes, then you would have done it last summer. But that’s easy to say now.

During last year’s November camp in Austria, Anna Bernholm’s adversity continued.

– He made a mistake in a situation and twisted his knee again. That’s where what little was left of the cruciate ligament went. Now he has nothing at all, says Eriksson.

“Ghost to the Olympics”

The latest injury kept Bernholm out of training until mid-January. Now it’s back on the table, but what looks like planning for the Tokyo Olympics is currently an unwritten sheet.

It is not known if there will be competition before the Olympics.

– I imagine saving myself for the Olympics, says Anna Bernholm.

“Other conditions”

TT: In that case, you will be without competition since February of last year, it is a long time.

– The most important thing for me is to be able to train well, what I can do. I come in quantity and I have good quality in the training I do now.

TT: So competitions don’t matter?

– If my knee had been completely, the best would have been to compete and follow another plan, the plan that others have. But sometimes you have other conditions and then you have to configure the plan that suits you best. In my case, maybe it’s saving me for the Olympics.
