Mouth guards in public transport, closed sports halls and prohibition of congestion in stores and shopping centers. Sweden’s strict restrictions resonated with several of the world’s major media outlets.
Sweden received a lot of attention when the king commented critically on Sweden’s strategy earlier this week, where he felt that Sweden had failed. Several world media mention it in relation to the new restrictions.
“Sweden has been the only country in Europe that has resisted a formal shutdown during the first and second waves, and the latest measures bring (the country) closer to having introduced a de facto shutdown of much of society,” he writes Financial times.
The Sydney Morning Herald follows the same path, noting that “a record number of new cases almost every week for the past two months has forced the government to do more.”
The AP news agency quotes the director general of the Swedish Public Health Agency, Johan Carlsson, who says that the authorities have never been against the oral protection requirements, but believes that it will have no decisive effect.
The British BBC reports that Sweden has far more COVID-19 cases than its Scandinavian neighbors, and that the country is one of the few that has not recommended oral protection outside of medical care.
France 24 of France says Sweden is taking a 180-degree turn from its “controversial strategy” and Dutch nu.nl says “new advice to wear a mouth guard on public transport is worth noting: this is the first once Sweden recommends a mouth guard. “
