Sweden’s silent diplomacy needs to be examined

All parties on the Riksdag’s Foreign Affairs Committee have supported a demand by the moderates for such an announcement to the government.

The notable cases involving the imprisoned book Gui Minhai in China and the author and journalist Dawit Isaak in Eritrea will be the starting point of the Commission.

“We have not been successful on the Swedish side when Gui Minhai is trapped in China and when Dawit Isaak is trapped in Eritrea,” the moderates’ foreign policy spokesman Hans Wallmark told Ekot.

– And then there is reason to see what has been done, what can be learned from it, what could have been done better or what has been motivated in the so-called silent diplomacy, he continues.

“Maybe you won’t do it with joy”

It was last winter that moderate leader Ulf Kristersson called for a review of the government’s handling of the Gui Minhai case. Kristersson’s demands were supported by the Left Party, which considered that such an examination should also include the case of Dawid Isaak, who has been in prison for 20 years.

– The government may not be happy to do this, but they also understand that there is political pressure, etc., and that they are a minority government, says Left Party foreign policy spokesman Håkan Svenneling.

The Riksdag is expected to make the announcement to the government in mid-January.
