Sweden passed over the Czech Republic and won the JVM debut 7-1.
Then Elmer Söderblom defended a true dream target.
– You’re guaranteed to go home to the cabins after that, exclaimed SVT commentator Chris Härenstam.
Elmer Söderblom had impressed throughout the match when the goal came within five minutes of the third period.
In his position in the power play in front of the opponent’s area, the great forward received the puck from his teammate in Frölunda, Lucas Raymond. Söderblom welcomed the pass by moving the puck between his legs and sprayed the puck on the far cross.
– It does the unexpected. Having that stick technique when you’re that tall … He’s the tallest and heaviest player in the tournament, but he also has one of the best stick techniques. It’s really delicious, says SVT expert Jonas Andersson.
Alnefelt’s great game
Söderblom’s goal was 5-1, but initially it was a tentative Swedish team that put the skates on the ice.
Sweden was a bit repelled and ended up at a disadvantage when Jan Mysak made it 1-0 on the power play. But immediately afterward, Juniorkronorna tied when Arvid Costmar conducted the album, very well served by Victor Söderström.
But it could also have been the Czech leadership. Hugo Alnefelt made several strong saves and kept the numbers low.
– You may have noticed a little at first that we had not received these training matches. It was important to be alert in the beginning. They had a few chances. It was nice for me to feel it there at first, so you warm up, says Alnefelt on SVT:
Release of ice in others
If Sweden was rusty in the first period, the act in between was the exact opposite.
Albin Sundsvik made it 2-1 on power play midway through the second period. Simon Holmström landed a ‘missed’ shot that bounced behind the goal and out the other side, where Sundsvik carefully stayed in front.
Two minutes later, Emil Heineman took advantage of an error by a Czech defender and lunged forward to put it 3-1 outnumbered.
The youth crowns then closed the period with another goal in numerical superiority signed by Theodor Niederbach.
The youth crowns won the match 7-1 after Oscar Bjerselius and Noel Gunler scored in the third period.
– I think we have something good. It’s a lot of fun, says team captain Philip Broberg at SVT.
Sweden plays its next match against Austria on December 29 at 00.00.
