Sweden crossed into Spain after the drama

Sweden had a shaky debut at the European Championship two days ago against the Czech Republic. Blågult did not start his game and attracted many expulsions (five against three from the Czech Republic). But in the end, they managed to win the premiere 27-23 after a strong second half.

On Saturday night it was time for a key match against Spain, which played in the World Cup final just over a year ago. The game was also key. Because the winner is most likely to advance to the intermediate round with two points and be in contention for the semi-final places. But the loser meant it will be the middle round with zero points, which meant a much more difficult road to the semifinals.

Very dramatic ending

Sweden started the match energetically and gained momentum in attacking play through, above all, Linn Blohm and Anna Lagerquist. But Spain played very well and entered the game. They also took the lead and the first half ended with a Swedish deficit, 10-13.

– We know that Spain is a tough opponent and plays very fast and with great speed. But I think we are standing firm and we need to move further, says Anna Lagerquist on Viaplay.

And pushing for more was exactly what Sweden did. Goal after goal and attack after attack, it was suddenly 20-21 for Blågult with only ten minutes remaining.

Sweden then had, with 15 seconds to go, the opportunity to decide the match. But Melissa Petrén missed the penalty and the drama ended in a draw, 23-23.

– It hurts a lot at the moment, especially when you could have decided the game. It’s not that fun, but just keep going. This is life. The result was perhaps just after all, says Petrén on TV6 after the game.

With the result, Sweden remains undefeated in the championship. Then Russia awaits Monday.
