Swedish alpine ladies cannot compete in Levi.

Finnish authorities have quarantined the entire team after a coach tested positive for COVID-19.

– It was definitely a shock, says alpine manager Tommy Eliasson Winter.

On Wednesday, news broke that Swedish coach Christina Thoma tested positive for the coronavirus when the national team arrived in Finland ahead of Saturday’s slalom premiere in Levi, Finland.

No one else on the Swedish team tested positive and initially the plan was for Swedish riders to be tested every day in order to compete. But now the riders are arrested.

Quarantined for seven days

The Finnish authorities have decided to quarantine the entire Swedish team with eight more leading skiers. The reason is that Thomas’ second crown test also came back positive.

– They act on the basis of the precautionary principle. According to the Finnish Infection Control Act, we are quarantined for at least seven days, says Alpine Manager Tommy Eliasson Winter, continuing:

– You’re in shock, even if you knew it could be like this. We took a chance by being on the go, but you might not have thought it would happen this way. But we have deep respect for the decisions of the authorities.

So runners can’t leave Finland for a week?

– I ask him the question of whether we can go home and the infection control doctor says we can discuss it. It is possible to make an exception, but that is a later question.

The Swedish skiers thus miss two of the nine slalom competitions of the season.
