Rosengård sports director Therese Sjögran said the cup should be canceled in an interview with Sydsvenskan.

Now it will be so.

On Friday, the Swedish Football Association decided to suspend the Swedish Cup for the ladies and further postpone the men.

The women’s side group game has yet to be played. With that in mind, SvFF has made the decision to cancel this year’s Swedish Cup edition, and no winner will be announced.

In an interview with Sydsvenskan, Rosengård sports manager Therese Sjögran emphasized that the league should prioritize allsvenskan and that the cup should be canceled. The union also writes that the decision to suspend “is supported by a large majority of the associations involved.”

“Of course, it is very sad not to have a cup champion on the women’s side this year, but depending on the circumstances, it is still a logical decision,” says SvFF President Karl-Erik Nilsson.

European place at stake for knights

The knights had gone further in the tournament. The group game was completed and the quarterfinals are currently in effect. Therefore, the decision was made to postpone more Swedish Cup for men.

The date the tournament will continue is not yet established.

“In the men of the Swedish Cup, where there are significantly fewer games left, the game is still postponed with the ambition of completing the competition, which is also what the participating associations want,” writes SvFF.

AIK can benefit

For gentlemen, a European place is also at stake and there are directives from the European football association Uefa that national associations must make efforts to decide the competitions on the field.

In case the cup does not play clearly, AIK is preferred. Last European place goes to the team that finished four at the Allsvenskan last season.

– If we can’t finish the cup, then the team that was “best” placed in the Allsvenskan last season will get the place, Karl-Erik Nilsson tells the Football Channel.
